Mobility Assistance Program

“I needed a wheelchair and you gave it to me.” – Our take on Matthew 25

We lend medical equipment—for free—to anyone who needs it, for as long as needed.

When a volunteer at First Pres started taking equipment donations of crutches and commodes, only God could foresee how this ministry would grow! In 2019, we loaned medical equipment to 28 people. In 2024, we served 202 people. The Mobility Assistance Program (MAP) is now connected to 20 Westerville organizations. Our equipment has gone to many households in the Columbus area as well—and has even seen international reach to Sierra Leone.

What you can borrow (or donate)

What you can borrow (or donate)

Since our inventory is donation-based, what we have varies. However, we regularly offer canes, crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, shower chairs, tub transfer benches, rollators, transport chairs, and toilet seat height extenders. Other items we’ve had include bed rails, knee scooters, and bedside commodes.

If you have a need, please ask — we may have just the thing. And if we don’t have what you’re looking for, we partner with other organizations and can help you find it.

For a detailed list of items we accept (and those we cannot take), please view our donation guide (PDF).

How to borrow

Just contact the MAP team by calling the church office at (614) 882-3155 or emailing us. Borrowers may keep the equipment for as long as they need, and there is no charge.

We do ask that the borrower—or a family member or friend—meet us at the church to pick up the equipment. Appointments are required since our entire team is volunteer-run. Limited delivery may be available in special circumstances.

When you are finished with the equipment, please return it if possible so it can be loaned to others in the community who may need it next.

Our process

A small committee of volunteers accepts equipment donations at the church. We clean and sanitize the items that come to us, perform minor repairs and adjustments, and then store the items in our equipment room to maintain a robust offering for immediate needs.

Important notes for borrowers

The borrower agrees to assume all risk for any potential equipment malfunction. All mobility assistance equipment in this program has been donated to First Presbyterian Church and has been inspected for cleanliness and functionality; however, no warranty or guarantee of reliability or safety is given by either the equipment manufacturer or First Presbyterian church.
